DAY 1, Saturday May 3rd – Leaving on a jet Plane

On this day (or sometime before) you will leave San Diego and traverse the plains and briny ocean to find ourselves a day later on the Emerald Isle where our chariot awaits us at Dublin Airport.

Day 2, Sunday, May 4th: Welcome to Ireland! The Hill of Tara & Dublin City Centre

Well now, folks, fáilte romhaibh! You’ve made it across the mighty Atlantic, and here you are, landing on the lush shores of the Emerald Isle! Cathy and Máirtín, will be your trusty guides as we venture through the heart and soul of Ireland. With Séamus at the wheel of our fine luxury coach, you’ll be in grand hands for the road ahead.

We’ll start our journey with a hearty breakfast in County Meath – sure, it’ll put some pep in your step after that long flight! From there, we’ll head to one of Ireland’s most sacred and ancient sites, the Hill of Tara. This historic royal seat of the High Kings offers a view that’ll leave you speechless. If the day’s clear, you might spy no fewer than 11 counties from the famous Stone of Destiny, where kings were inaugurated up until the 6th century. It’s a place steeped in legend and lore, where history whispers through the gentle breeze.

Once we’ve soaked in the splendor of Tara, it’s back aboard with Séamus for a scenic tour around Dublin’s fair city. We’ll roll past some of its beautiful gardens and take a moment of quiet reflection at the High Cross in Phoenix Park, one of Europe’s largest enclosed city parks.

By late afternoon, we’ll be pulling up to the charming Ashling Hotel, where you can settle in and rest your legs. Tonight, you’ll have the chance to explore Dublin at your own pace or simply relax, knowing your Irish adventure has only just begun.

Welcome home to Ireland! You’ll be well cared for on every step of this journey.

DAY 3, Monday, May 5th: Discovering Dublin – The EPIC Museum, City Centre Adventures, and an Evening of Music

After a restful night in the comfort of the Ashling Hotel, you’ll wake to the aroma of a fine Irish breakfast waiting for you downstairs. Whether it’s a plate of warm soda bread, golden eggs, or a proper full Irish with all the trimmings, you’ll be well-fueled for the grand day ahead.

Our adventure begins with a short hop down along the River Liffey to one of Dublin’s crown jewels: the EPIC Museum of Irish Emigration. Now, this is no ordinary museum, let me tell you—it’s an experience! Through stunning interactive displays, you’ll follow the footsteps of millions of Irish men and women who left these shores in search of new lives across the globe. From the struggles to the triumphs, the music to the mischief, you’ll see how the Irish have left their mark far and wide.

And if you’ve ever wondered if there’s a touch of Irish blood running through your veins, well, today might be the day you find out! The museum’s genealogy centre offers tools and guidance to help trace your roots back to Irish soil. Who knows, you might uncover a High King or a bard in your family tree!

Once your imagination has danced through history, we’ll leave you to roam Dublin City Centre for the afternoon. The city is alive with stories and charm, so take your time exploring its winding streets and lively corners. Stroll down Grafton Street, where street performers serenade the passersby, or take a wander through the historic Trinity College to marvel at the stunning Book of Kells and the grandeur of the Long Room Library.

For those of you with a thirst for a proper pint, a visit to a cozy local pub might be just the ticket. Or perhaps you’d like to take in the tranquil beauty of St. Stephen’s Green, a peaceful oasis right in the heart of the city. Whatever tickles your fancy, Dublin is yours to discover.

By evening, we’ll gather once again for a true treat: a special concert with our very own Máirtín de Cógáin. He’ll regale us with songs and stories that will transport you back to the hearths of old Ireland, filling the air with laughter, longing, and plenty of toe-tapping rhythms. It’s not every day you have your tour guide double as your evening’s entertainment!

With full hearts and perhaps a few tunes still echoing in your head, you’ll return to the Ashling Hotel for another restful night. Sleep tight, for the road ahead promises even more wonders!

DAY 4, Tuesday, May 6th: From St. Brigid to St. Brendan – A Journey South to Kerry

Good morning, my friends! Today we bid farewell to the lively streets of Dublin as we trade city lights for rolling hills and wild coastlines. After a hearty breakfast at the Ashling Hotel, we’ll climb aboard Séamus’s trusty coach and set off on a journey that blends history, charm, and the breathtaking beauty of Ireland’s south.

Our first stop is the sacred town of Kildare, where we’ll visit the magnificent St. Brigid’s Cathedral and its Round Tower. St. Brigid herself, one of Ireland’s three patron saints, holds a special place in our hearts, and here you’ll feel her spirit in every stone. For the brave among us, if the refurbishment is complete, the round tower offers one of the rare opportunities to climb inside one of these ancient structures and take in the view from above.

From there, we continue our journey south, crossing into the heart of the country. Around midday, we’ll stretch our legs and stop for a bite to eat in the storybook village of Adare, County Limerick. This charming spot is famed for its postcard-perfect thatched cottages and tranquil atmosphere. Whether you fancy a wander through its picturesque streets, a quick peek into the local shops, or just a relaxed lunch in one of its cozy cafés, Adare is a little slice of old Ireland that’s sure to steal your heart.

Once refreshed, we’ll be back on the road, heading west to the jewel of the Dingle Peninsula. By evening, we’ll arrive at our home for the next two nights: the stunning Dingle Skellig Hotel (Ostán na Sceilge). Nestled on the edge of the Atlantic and surrounded by the raw beauty of Kerry, this 4-star gem promises luxury, comfort, and hospitality that’s as warm as the fires in its hearths. You’ll see why so many visitors leave Dingle with plans to return.

After settling into your rooms and taking in those magnificent views, we’ll gather for a group dinner in the hotel’s fine dining room. Over a delicious meal, we’ll share stories and laughter, looking back on the day’s adventures and ahead to the magic yet to come.

But sure, what’s an Irish evening without a bit of music? As the night deepens, we’ll be treated to some live tunes that’ll lift your spirits and leave your toes tapping. Whether it’s a reel or a song of longing, it’s the perfect way to end a day of travel and discovery.

So, rest well tonight, my friends – tomorrow, the wonders of the Dingle Peninsula and the Wild Atlantic Way await, and trust me, you’re in for a treat!

DAY 5, Wednesday, May 7th: The Enchantment of the Dingle Peninsula

Good morning, folks! After another fine breakfast at the Dingle Skellig Hotel, we’ll board the coach and set our sights westward to one of the most magical places in all of Ireland – the Dingle Peninsula. This stretch of West Kerry is the kind of place that stays with you long after you’ve left, a land of windswept beauty, rich history, and stories woven into every hill and stone.

As we venture along the peninsula, you’ll see why it’s often said that no matter how many times you visit, there’s always more to discover. We’ll take the famed Slea Head Drive, a 46-kilometer loop that starts and ends in Dingle itself. It’s a route that’s part of the Wild Atlantic Way and easily one of the most stunning journeys you’ll ever make. Around every bend, you’ll find views that’ll stop you in your tracks – dramatic cliffs, golden beaches, and the vast expanse of the Atlantic stretching to the horizon.

Our first big stop will be the Great Blasket Centre, where you’ll get a sense of the history and spirit of the Blasket Islands just off the coast. These rugged isles were home to a hardy community of Irish speakers whose storytelling and literary tradition gave us some of the country’s greatest authors. Standing here, looking out over the Atlantic, you’ll feel the pull of their words and their lives. We’ll have a bite to eat at the centre’s café, where you can enjoy lunch with a view that’s hard to beat.

If the weather is kind – and we’ll cross our fingers for that – we might even take a wee stroll to the most westerly point of Europe. Imagine standing on the edge of the world, the wind in your hair, and the ocean stretching endlessly before you. It’s a moment you won’t forget in a hurry.

As the afternoon winds down, we’ll head back toward Dingle town, but not before giving you some free time to soak up the charm of this bustling little harbor. Whether it’s browsing the colorful shops, visiting Fungie the dolphin’s statue, or just enjoying a pint in a local pub, Dingle is a place where the craic is never far away.

Tonight, the evening is yours to explore the town further and find yourself a spot for dinner. From fresh seafood caught just that morning to hearty Irish classics, Dingle’s restaurants and pubs will have something to delight every palate.

When we’ve all filled our bellies and shared a few laughs, we’ll regroup for the highlight of the evening – a session of live music. It’s an Irish tradition that brings people together, and whether you’re tapping your feet or singing along, it’ll be a night to treasure.

DAY 6 – Thursday, May 8th: Killarney, How Beautiful You Are!

After another lovely breakfast at the hotel, we’ll pack ourselves up and head off on another day of adventure. Today, we’re bound for the heart of County Kerry – Killarney, a place so beautiful it’ll leave you wondering if it’s not some enchanted dream.

First up, we’ll visit the famous Lakes of Killarney, shimmering like something out of a fairy tale. If the weather’s on our side (and we’ll pray to St. Brendan for that!), we’ll take to the waters on a small boat for a gentle cruise. Keep your eyes peeled for swans gliding gracefully across the surface and the lush green shores rolling out around you.

Our destination across the water is Inishfallen Island, home to the ruins of an ancient monastery founded in the 7th century. This was once a great seat of learning, where monks spent their days illuminating manuscripts and sharing wisdom. Wandering among the ruins, you can almost hear the whispers of history in the soft rustle of the leaves.

When we return to dry land, the next leg of our journey will take us by Jaunting Car – the traditional Irish horse-drawn carriage. It’s the only proper way to see Killarney’s National Park, sure isn’t it? As the jarveys (drivers) spin you through the woods, don’t be shy to chat – they love a bit of attention!

Once we’ve had our fill of the lakes and jaunts, we’ll step into Killarney town for a bit of free time. The town is a lively hub, perfect for picking up a few gifts or souvenirs. Whether it’s Aran knitwear, jewelry with Celtic designs, or a book of Irish poetry, you’re bound to find something to bring a bit of Ireland home with you.

As the sun begins to lower, we’ll make our way to the charming town of Macroom, where we’ll settle in for a couple of nights at the Castle Hotel. This family-run gem combines modern comfort with a touch of old Irish elegance. Tonight, we’ll gather in the hotel’s dining room for a delicious group dinner, a chance to share stories from the day and enjoy each other’s company over fine food and drink.

By day’s end, you’ll have seen the beauty of Killarney, tasted its charm, and soaked up its spirit. Sleep soundly tonight – tomorrow, the best of West Cork await!

Day 7 – Friday, May 9th: West Cork! A Day of Rebellion and Heroes

After filling ourselves with a proper Full Irish Breakfast – black pudding and all – we’ll set off for a day steeped in history, legend, and a bit of hands-on fun. West Cork awaits, a land of rolling hills, quiet valleys, and stories of rebellion that shaped the Ireland we know today.

Our first stop is a delightful one – the Toy Soldier Factory. Now, this isn’t just for the youngsters among us; it’s a treat for everyone! You’ll get a chance to craft your very own figurine, a wee keepsake to take home and remind you of your time here. Whether you fancy a soldier, a fairy, or a bit of Irish folklore, the joy is in the making. It’s a grand way to start the day with smiles and creativity.

From there, we’ll journey deeper into the heart of Irish history, to Kilmichael, the site of one of the most pivotal ambushes of the War of Independence. It was here in 1920 that General Tom Barry and his Flying Column struck a blow that rattled the British forces. Standing on this hallowed ground, you’ll hear tales of courage, strategy, and the fierce determination of a people fighting for their freedom.

Next, we’ll continue to Béal na Bláth, a quiet and unassuming spot with a heavy story to tell. It was here, in 1922, that one of Ireland’s greatest leaders, Michael Collins, met his untimely end in an ambush during the Civil War. Known as “The Big Fellow,” Collins was a visionary and a hero to many, and standing here, you’ll feel the weight of his loss and the significance of his legacy.

After an emotional day of rebellion and reflection, we’ll make our way back to Macroom, where the evening is yours to explore the town and find a cozy spot for dinner. Whether it’s a pint in a local pub or a hearty Irish stew in a charming eatery, Macroom will surely provide.

Once the plates are cleared and the night begins to settle in, we’ll gather for a special treat. Máirtín himself will bring music to lift our spirits and set our toes tapping. It’s the perfect way to end a day rich in history – with songs and stories that remind us of the indomitable Irish spirit.

Day 8 – Saturday, May 10th: Cork, Emigration, and Whiskey!

It’s time to pack up your bags and prepare for another day of discovery. Today, we bid farewell to the rugged beauty of West Cork and the Wild Atlantic Way, setting our sights eastward to delve into Ireland’s Ancient East. History, heritage, and a wee drop of whiskey!

Our first stop is the charming harbor town of Cobh, a place steeped in the poignant history of Irish emigration. At the Cobh Heritage Centre, you’ll walk through the stories of those who left these shores for distant lands, their hopes and heartbreaks etched into Ireland’s history. As the last port of call for the ill-fated Titanic, Cobh carries its own unique legacy, and standing by the harbor, you’ll feel the echoes of the past in the salty sea air.

After your tour, you’ll have time to wander the colorful streets of Cobh. Find a cozy café for lunch, pop into a local shop, or simply soak in the charm of this vibrant seaside town. Don’t forget to look out for St. Colman’s Cathedral, its spire soaring above the town like a beacon.

Once we’ve had our fill of Cobh, it’s time for a change of pace – and a change of taste! We’ll make our way to Midleton, home to the legendary Jameson Distillery. Here, you’ll step back in time with a tour of the old distillery, where Irish whiskey-making traditions have been perfected over centuries. On our own private tour you’ll marvel at the world’s largest pot still, learn the craft behind the golden spirit, and, of course, enjoy a tasting. Sláinte!

With spirits lifted – both figuratively and literally – we’ll continue east to Dungarvan, a picturesque town on the Waterford coast. Here, we’ll settle in for the evening at the family-run Park Hotel, a place that exudes warmth and hospitality. Tonight, we’ll come together for a group dinner, sharing stories, laughter, and perhaps even a toast to the adventures we’ve had so far.

As the day winds down, you’ll rest easy, knowing you’ve walked in the footsteps of emigrants, marveled at whiskey-making wonders, and soaked up the best of what Cork and Waterford have to offer.

Day 9 – Sunday, May 11th: Waterford City – Ireland’s Oldest City

Good morning, friends! Today, we step back in time to explore the rich and storied past of Waterford City, the oldest city in Ireland and a place that has seen it all – from Viking raiders to Norman conquerors and beyond.

Our journey begins as we make our way to Waterford, where a local guide will be waiting to bring the city’s fascinating history to life. You’ll hear the tales of Viking warlords, who first established a settlement here over a thousand years ago, and discover why the Normans made Waterford their southern stronghold before turning their sights on Dublin.

We’ll also visit the spot where the Irish Tricolor was first raised by Thomas Francis Meagher, a Waterford man whose vision for Irish freedom is still celebrated today. Walking the ancient streets, you’ll feel the layers of history beneath your feet – a storybook of Ireland’s resilience and innovation.

After the tour, the city is yours to explore at your leisure. Stroll along the Viking Triangle, browse the shops, or simply find a cozy café for a bite of lunch. Waterford is a city that’s as welcoming as it is historic, so take your time to soak it all in.

In the afternoon, we’ll visit the renowned House of Waterford Crystal, where centuries of craftsmanship are on display. You’ll marvel at the intricate artistry behind each piece and gain a newfound appreciation for this world-famous Irish treasure. Whether you’re browsing the showroom or watching the master craftsmen at work, it’s an experience not to be missed.

As the day winds down, we’ll return to Dungarvan. The evening is yours to enjoy dinner at one of the town’s lovely spots, whether it’s fresh seafood by the harbor or a hearty Irish meal in a local pub.

But the night doesn’t end there – oh no! After dinner, we’ll come together for a night of music, where Máirtín and friends will keep the tunes flowing and the spirits high. It’s the perfect way to close out a day filled with history, culture, and the magic of Waterford.

Day 10 – Monday, May 12th: Back on the Road to Dublin!

Ah, the final day of our grand adventure has arrived! After a hearty breakfast and packing our bags for the last leg of the journey, it’s time to hit the road one more time. Our first stop will be the stunning Jerpoint Abbey in County Kilkenny, a beautifully preserved ruin that dates back to the 12th century. Here, you’ll step into the past, wandering the ancient grounds of this Cistercian monastery, where the silence and serenity will leave you in awe. The abbey’s architecture and its rich history will give you a glimpse of Ireland’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

From Jerpoint, we’ll make our way to the Garden County of Wicklow, where we’ll stop for lunch with Cathy’s old neighbours in the charming town of Baltinglass. A lovely spot for a bite, and a perfect place to take in the countryside before we move on.

After lunch, we’ll journey to Glendalough, the picturesque ‘valley of the two lakes’ nestled deep within the heart of Wicklow Mountains National Park. This place has captivated souls for thousands of years, and it’s no wonder. Surrounded by rugged hills, dense forest, and shimmering lakes, Glendalough is a haven for anyone who loves nature and history. You’ll have time to explore on your own, perhaps take a peaceful walk around the lakes, or discover the ancient monastic site where St. Kevin once lived in solitude. With its wildlife, stunning views, and spiritual energy, Glendalough is the kind of place that stays with you long after you’ve left.

As we leave the valley behind, we’ll head towards Dublin, where our tour will come to a close. We’ll check in to Hilton Hotel Dublin Airport, where you’ll have a bit of time to freshen up and reflect on the incredible journey we’ve shared.

This evening, we’ll gather for the last supper together – a final meal to celebrate the laughter, the adventures, and the friendships made along the way. It’s a chance to sing, laugh, and raise a glass to the memories we’ve made on this unforgettable trip.

So let’s make the most of this last night, my friends. The road may be ending, but the memories will last a lifetime. And remember, no matter where you go, there’s always a warm Irish welcome waiting for you at the Irish Outreach Center.

Make sure you book your free shuttle to airport for the following morning before you retire to bed.

Day 11 – Departure Day, Tuesday, May 12th: Home, Sweet Home!

Ah, it’s that bittersweet day we’ve all been dreading – Departure Day. After a last hearty breakfast together, we’ll check out of our Dublin hotel and make our way to the airport, where we’ll say our fond farewells.

You’ve travelled the length and breadth of Ireland, soaked up the history, the culture, and the craic, and now it’s time to head back to the sun-drenched shores of San Diego. Dublin Airport is the gateway to home, but before you board your flight, take a moment to reflect on all the memories we’ve made together – the laughs, the songs, and the stunning landscapes.

With bags packed and hearts full, you’ll be off once again, setting sail westward across the Atlantic. And while this part of the journey may be ending, know that the memories of Ireland will stay with you forever. We’ll leave you with a little piece of Irish hospitality in your heart, and a promise that you’ll always be welcome back on our shores.

Slán go fóill, my friends, until we meet again. Safe travels, and may the road rise to meet you!

—————————————

About Cathy – Cathy Ward was born and raised in Baltinglass,Co. Wicklow, the ‘Garden of Ireland’. Along with her sisters and brothers, she grew up working on the dairy and sheep farm that her parents owned. Here she learned to take nothing for granted. It was hard work but very rewarding and it gave her a great appreciation for nature and the outdoors.Walking the ‘Wicklow Hills’ continues to be one of her favorite things to do.

As a young lady, Cathy’s adventurous spirit took her to the U.S. in 1985 where she lived in New York for a few years, traveled around and lived in a many other states before moving to San Diego, California. Once she settled into her life in San Diego she knew she had found a very special place.

In February 2017 she joined the Irish Outreach Center (Founded in 1999) as a Project Coordinator, and worked closely with then Executive Director, Stephen Aherne. When Stephen moved on from the Outreach in August 2019, Cathy assumed her current role as Executive Director. Having lived in San Diego for over 30 years Cathy brought a wealth of experience to the position as she had been intimately involved in the “Local Irish Scene” since her arrival.

Cathy loves to chat about her home country and is very excited to have this opportunity to work with Mairtin and show off the land of her birth. She has known Mairtin for over 8 years now and have collaborated on some other fun projects in the past. Cathy is married to local Publican Mick Ward, owner of The Ould Sod Pub. They got married in Ireland in 2002 and over 100 people from San Diego traveled to Ireland for the wedding! They have two wonderful children called Aisling (20 year old College student) and Paddy (17 year old High School student).

About Máirtín –  Máirtín is a singing, dancing, story-telling bodhrán player who also is a noted playwright and actor.  He performs in his native Ireland and all over the U.S…. and between and beyond, too!

An infectious personality, Máirtín pleasantly commands the attention of any collection of people, from a concert hall to an intimate porch.  Descended from a long line of storytellers and with two CCÉ All-Ireland’s for Storytelling under his belt, Máirtín gets no more joy out of life than the telling of stories.

When touring the globe with The Máirtín de Cógáin Project, The Fuchsia Band, & Gailfean, Máirtín is also a true promoter of the Ballad.  He is searching ever for those forgotten songs of old to give them new life, and also writes some of his own.  Máirtín learnt from many famous Irish singers such as Danni Maichi Ua Súilleabháin, Séamus Mac Mathúna, and Ciarán Dwyer. A fluent speaker of Irish, his love of the ‘Teanga na Gael‘ stems from his parents, who brought him up in a bilingual house and sent him to primary & secondary schools taught in the medium of Irish.  Máirtín then earned a Degree in the Irish language from University College Cork.

If not on stage singing, storytelling, dancing, or playing the bodhrán, Máirtín is threading the boards as an actor, most notably in the film The Wind that Shakes the Barley.  He has co-written many productions with the Be Your Own Banana Theatre Company, recently playing De Bogman off-broadway in NY.

Máirtín has been playing the bodhrán for a long many moons, learning first from Eric Cunningham (The New De Danann) and later from Colm Murphy (The Old De Danann).

Growing up in a house full of dancing, Máirtín could not but help teach the steps at the family run Céilís from an early age, and a gifted teacher of Cork’s folk dances he is.  Máirtín makes friends wherever he goes.  In a very short time, Máirtín, the Fuchsia Band, and the “Project” have made themselves regulars at some of the most prestigious Irish festivals in the U.S. While now living in San Diego, he has taken up Sanke Charming & Bird Watching while not on the road and hopes one day for A Big Year!

And now, Máirtín is proud to offer this special tour of Ireland!  We hope you are able to join us for what is sure to be a grand event!
